Temporary exhibition
In the footsteps of Amedeo Avogadro
Cathedral Treasury Museum and Chapter Archives - Vercelli (VC)
From Sunday 11.10.2026 to Monday 30 November 2026
As part of the celebrations for the 250 years since his birth by the famous scientist Amedeo Avogadro, known throughout the world for his fundamental contributions to physics and the chemistry – such as the the distinction between an atom and a molecule and the determinant discovery concerning gases –, the Cathedral Treasury Museum Foundation and Vercelli Chapter Archives offers an exhibition and documentary programme of great historical and cultural value.
The exhibition traces the rich history of the the Avogadro family at the Middle Ages and its links with the Diocese of Vercelli. The very name of the dynasty derives from the ancient and prestigious role it played for centuries: that of the bishop’s lawyers, a person responsible for administering the assets and safeguarding the legal interests of the diocese. Thanks to this dedication, the family attained, as early as 12th century extensive estates and feudal titles, establishing themselves as one of the most influential families in the economic and political landscape amongst Vercelli e Biella.
The cultural tour offers visitors the chance to admire a carefully curated selection of valuable documents sourced directly from the’Chapter Archives, enriched by a rare volume belonging to the Giovanni Ferraris Collection. The initiative stems from a collaboration with the’Cultural Heritage Office of the Archdiocese and the Vercelli Historical Society, as part of the programme organised by the’Amedeo Avogadro University of Eastern Piedmont and from the Municipality of Vercelli.
