Stele. Donato Savin

The timeless charm of stone takes shape at Usseglio thanks to the collaboration between the Tazzetti Museum and the internationally renowned sculptor from the Aosta Valley Donato Savin, with the essential critical contribution of the editor Aldo Audisio. The exhibition is set against a truly evocative backdrop, taking place in the open spaces of the Courtyard of the old parish complex and the interior of the charming old Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, now an integral part of the museum complex. The exhibition features nineteen stone sculptures, many of which are of considerable size, characterised by elongated monoliths and schist stones reshaped by the artist through simple yet precise sculptural interventions.

The idea for this famous series of artworks was conceived by Savin by visiting the Archaeological Museum of Aosta, where he was struck by the ancient vertical forms, interpreting them as veritable stone gods. Deeply rooted in his Cogne Valley, the artist proves himself to be a keen observer of nature: he selects the blocks whilst retaining their natural fissures and preserving their original surfaces, covered in moss and lichen. The acid greens of the wild vegetation contrast with, yet blend harmoniously with, the veins, porosity and mineral roughness of the rock. This international travelling exhibition, originally conceived to Trento Film Festival, has already achieved prestigious milestones such as the Belluno Civic Museumthe Fortress of Bard at Aosta Valley, the city of Sondrio, until it reaches Zakopane at Poland e Braşov at Romania.
