Quiet state

The MA*GA Museum by Gallarate continues its investigation into the digital languages and dialogue between technology e artistic practice contemporary. The exhibition, curated by Alessandro Castiglioni, presents the unreleased project of John Ferrario, an exhibition that puts the apparent immobility of the’image with the profound instability of the processes that generate it. The exhibited works are still lifes realised through the’artificial intelligence, series, belonging to the Atlas of the verisimilar. These works are located in an ambiguous space: they seem suspended in time, yet are the result of continuous flows of data, calculations e probability.

In the tradition of art history, still life is the genre of stillness par excellence, where inanimate objects suggest silence and balance. However, in this exhibition, this concept is radicalised: the’algorithm and the neural networks produce images that have never known material reality, yet simulate its presence with astonishing accuracy. The concept of state of stillness, borrowed from the classical physics, defines a body that does not vary its position; yet, just as the theories of the quantum physics, absolute stillness does not exist. Even when a system appears to be at a standstill, within it persist residual energies e imperceptible movements, represented here by the invisible rhythm of digital processes.
