The Pinacoteca Ambrosiana hosts a widespread exhibition of Nativity scenes from the Museo del Presepio di Dalmine.
There are eleven specimens of various origins. Neapolitan, Lombard, African and Burmese cribs made using the most diverse techniques.
Those in paper, a theatreor made with figures obtained from special cutout sheets Mounted on rigid supports and arranged in a scene, they were donated to the Dalmine Museum by a private collector and all date from the late 19th and early 20th century.
Prominent among these are the reproduction of the Nativity scene created by artist Giuseppe Carsana in 1868 for the Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows in Rho and the transposition into print of some characters from the famous Gernetto crib painted by Francesco Londonio, a painter widely represented in Ambrosian collectionsone of the reference models for all Milanese printed production in the 19th century.
The proposal is intended to be a contribution to the rediscovery of the charm and enchantment of paper cribs, widespread in Europe since the first half of the 18th century, which are a significant part of the Catholic tradition. It is an artistic and cultural heritage that has been re-evaluated in recent years by researchers and collectors, enabling the formation of valuable collections that include the most diverse types.
