GAM - Gallery of Modern Art - Milan (MI)

From Friday 26.09.2025 to Sunday 25.01.2026
The exhibition Pellizza da Volpedo. Masterpieceshosted at the Milan Gallery of Modern Artrepresents a unique opportunity to rediscover Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedoone of the greatest interpreters of the Italian Divisionism. More than a century after the last monographic exhibition dedicated to the artist, Milan celebrates the entire creative path of this painter, who was able to transform painting into a social, symbolic and technical language of extraordinary modernity.
Edited by Aurora Scotti e Paola Zatti, the exhibition presents forty works between paintings and drawings from prestigious public and private, Italian and international collections. The route winds its way through the five exhibition rooms on the ground floor of the Royal Villaas well as the hall of the famous Fourth State on the first floor. The return of the iconic canvas to GAM in 2022 offered the opportunity to place it in direct confrontation with other Divisionist masterpieces, from Previati a Segantiniemphasising Pellizza's influence on the futurist generation.
The exhibition is divided into thematic sections that illustrate the stages of the artist's career: from the first realistic portraits to the great symbolist themes, to the more mature works in which the light and the colour become instruments of social storytelling. Of particular impact is the section dedicated to Fourth Statewith the unprecedented exhibition of preparatory cartoonswhich document its genesis and deep connection with the Italian painting tradition.
Accompanying the exhibition is a rich catalogue published by Dario Cimorelli Publisher.
