The MAO of Turin presents the first of three selections dedicated to the masterpiece by Utagawa Hiroshige, The 53 stations of the Tōkaidōas part of the refurbishment of the Japanese gallery. On show 19 original woodcuts of the 19th century series, preserved in the UniCredit collection, which illustrate with rare poetry the famous route that connected Kyoto to Edo (Tokyo) along the east coast of Japan.
The result of an international collaboration with the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréalthe exhibition is characterised by an approach ecologically sustainable and for the enhancement of curatorial thinking, avoiding the physical transportation of works and focusing instead on the sharing of content and exhibition visions.
The woodcuts, produced between 1833 and 1834 by the publisher Takenouchi Magohachirevolutionised the world of ukiyo-ewith their accessible, narrative and innovative style. Hiroshigesamurai artist, reinvented the Japanese landscape by mixing tradition and modernityusing central perspectives, shading and vivid colours such as the famous synthetic blue.
The exhibition is curated by Laura Vigowith texts and didactic apparatuses borrowed from the Canadian edition. A unique opportunity to admire a work that was created for widespread popular distribution and is now recognised as a milestone of theJapanese art of the 19th centurycapable of evoking dreamlike worlds, imaginary journeys and dreams of adventure.
