Rebellious Muses

The exhibition, curated by the art historian Consuelo Lollobrigida, offers a fascinating journey through over five centuries of art history created to explore the profound and complex relationship between images, identity and power. The project is structured around more than sixty works – which include paintings, photographs, installations e video – fostering a constant and stimulating dialogue artists which have left their mark on visual culture and played a decisive role in shaping, interpreting and radically transforming the the portrayal of women in Western culture.

The exhibition brings together some extraordinary masterpieces by leading figures in the history of art such as Sofonisba Anguissola, Lavinia Fontana, Artemisia Gentileschi, Plautilla Nelli, Elisabetta Sirani, Virginia da Vezzo e Rosalba Carriera. Alongside these great masters of the past are the works of famous contemporary female artists such as Ketty La Rocca, Dadamaino, Vanessa Beecroft, Shirin Neshat, Elisabetta Di Sopra e Alice Pasquini, sparking a heated debate between different eras and languages capable of offering valuable new insights.

More than just a simple display, the exhibition takes the form of a genuine an investigation into the power of images and on their remarkable ability to influence the collective memory, the social relations and the perception of identity. Backed by a rigorous international scientific research, the visitor experience also includes an innovative interactive installation dedicated to Frida Kahlo based on the’artificial intelligence, l'Amuseapp official audio guide and a route accessible to pets.
