Temporary exhibition
Modigliani under the skin. Four masterpieces
GIOVANNI AND MARELLA AGNELLI PICTURE GALLERY - Turin (TO)
includedFrom Thursday 30.04.2026 to Sunday 13.09.2026
The exhibition is part of the Beyond the Collection, an initiative aimed at bringing together masterpieces from the museum's permanent collection with loans from prestigious international institutions. The centrepiece of the exhibition is the famous work Nu couché (Lying nude) of Amedeo Modigliani, stored inside the Treasure chest designed by Renzo Piano. This masterpiece is placed in direct relation with three other exceptional paintings by the artist from Livorno, exceptionally loaned by the Centre Pompidou by Paris and the Staatsgalerie by Stuttgart, thus offering visitors a valuable opportunity for critical insight.
The innovation of the exhibition route lies in the union of art history and science. In fact, the exhibition develops from the results of in-depth scientific investigations e diagnostic analyses conducted on materials. The study of the plot and thewarp of the canvases made it possible to historically reconstruct the origin of the rolls of fabric used by the painter in his studio in Paris. This innovative methodological approach not only unveils the technical secrets hidden “under the skin” of painting, but also introduces a fundamental and unprecedented tool for the dating of works of the artist. Curated by Peter Rigolo e Beatrice Zanelli, The exhibition offers an original interpretation that combines the formal sensuality of the famous nudes with the materiality of their creation.
