Temporary exhibition

Elisabetta Di Maggio. Frangible

GAM - Municipal Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art - Turin (TO)

included
From Wednesday 29.10.2025 to Sunday 1.03.2026

by Chiara Bertola e Fabio Cafagna

Set up on the first floor of the GAM, the exhibition traces the career of Elisabetta Di Maggiopresenting historical works and new productions created specifically for the museum spaces.

Carving, A peculiar character of Di Maggio's artistic practice, it is both a means of exploring the material, taking care of it, and a violent gesture, which lacerates and does not allow the slightest reconsideration.

His works - engraved tissue paper walls, soaps sculpted like city maps, wax and glass mosaics, fine porcelain, plant elements, stamp mandalas - challenge the boundary between abstraction and figuration, between natural and artificial.

Perceptual instability is accompanied by a sensory immersion of smells, sounds and contemplation. The exhibition opens with Annunciation (2025), two dragonfly wings in oxidised copper, and closes with Desiderale (2006), a video in which film cutting generates a starry sky.

The six-room itinerary explores themes such as mapping, cosmic and vegetal patterns, memory, the sacredness of nature and hypnotic symmetries, conveying the artist's profound astonishment at the variety of organic and artificial forms.
