The Engineer and Margarita: The City of Infinite Theatre
Design Circle - Turin (TO)
includedFrom Thursday 21.05.2026 to Saturday 3.10.2026
The exhibition celebrates an unrepeatable season for the theatrical experience of the 1990s in Turin, focusing on the dual and simultaneous representation of “The Makropulos Affair” by Karel Čapek, staged on 9 December 1993. This extraordinary event saw the parallel involvement of two of the city's top institutions: the Carignano Theatre, with a prose performance enhanced by the sets and costumes of Carlo Diappi and the interpretation of Mariangela Melato, and the Regio Theatre, where the opera in three acts featured sets by Margherita Palli and the voice of Raina Kabaivanska.
The exhibition, curated at the Design Circle, deepens the dialogue between art e technique through the central figures of the stage designer Margherita Palli and engineer Silvano Cova, at the time technical director of the Regio Theatre. The exhibition reveals how the magic of the stage takes shape in the relationship between creative vision and engineering expertise. Visitors can admire previously unpublished archive material from the Turin Theatre Study Centre and theHistorical Archive of the Teatro Regio Torino, enriched by the direct testimonies of those who made this monumental cultural enterprise possible, restoring the image of a city capable of transforming itself into a real infinite theatre.
