Letizia Battaglia. Her Work 1970–2020

A wide-ranging and comprehensive retrospective dedicated to the work and the extraordinary figure of Letizia Battaglia, one of the most influential and iconic performers of the contemporary photography and the photojournalism international. The exhibition traces a full fifty years of his career and civic activism, beginning with his early days in Milan from the early 1970s right up to the visceral and dramatic portrayal of Palermo and the Sicily. Through a powerful and moving exhibition that features over two hundred photographs, the exhibition depicts, with raw honesty and profound poetry, the bloody years of the Mafia wars, capturing honour killings unfiltered, with judges on the front line as Giovanni Falcone, the victims and the faces of organised crime.

At the same time, the artist’s watchful and empathetic eye captures the dignity of the most marginalised, the vitality of working-class neighbourhoods, the gaze of young girls and the everyday beauty of the streets. Enriching and complementing this visual journey, the exhibition features twenty-two magazines and newspapers vintage publications with which the photographer has collaborated over the years — in addition to the publications she herself founded and edited — and the screening of a captivating docufilm which traces his personal, political and artistic life.
