The body of the city

A fascinating journey through a century of history, exploring the city’s evolution through the representation, discipline and liberation of the human body. The project highlights the symbiotic relationship between urban growth, social change and the worlds of fashion, art and culture. Through paintings, sculptures, photographs, posters and over forty clothes from Turin tailors, the exhibition highlights the value of a predominantly female workforce which, at the beginning of the 20th century, constituted a fundamental economic pillar.

The narrative is divided into four sections, marked by the major Expositions. It begins with the Turin late 19th-century bourgeois life, as depicted in the paintings of Enrico Junck and Enrico Reycend, passing through the bend Art Nouveau featuring sculptures by Edoardo Rubino for theInternational Exhibition of Modern Decorative Art from 1902. The exhibition traces a journey through the 1920s and 1930s, focusing on the paintings of Felice Casorati, the research carried out by the Are you from Turin?, the trial of the Futurist photography by Italo Bertoglio e Ottorino Gramaglia, right up to the role of the’National Fashion Organisation. The final section examines the post-war period and the economic boom, highlighting the link with the Civic Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, works by artists such as Carol Rama, the great architectural works of Italy 61 and the birth of the SAMIA.
