The Drake's Enemies

The MAUTO - National Automobile Museum by Turin presents an extraordinary exhibition tracing the historical rivalry between Enzo Ferrari and British teams. The exhibition, curated by Carlo Cavicchi, Mario Donnini e Maurizio Cilli, spread over more than 2000sqm and stages the clash between two opposing philosophies: on the one hand the myth of the Drake, a standard bearer of Italian tradition, and on the other the so-called “garages“. The latter, small British builders like Lotus, McLaren, Brabham e Tyrrell, revolutionised the Formula 1 between the 1960s and 1980s thanks to radical technical innovations and avant-garde frames.

The exhibition route boasts 23 iconic cars, including the Cooper T51, the Lotus 72 and the Ferrari 640, alongside a rich selection of memorabilia, such as 28 helmets, historical overalls and race programmes from five continents. The narrative is not limited to motorsport, but is interwoven with the cultural ferment of the Swinging London, analysing the impact of fashion, music and design on the collective imagination of the time. Enriching the experience are a selection of photographs by Rainer W. Schlegelmilch and the generative video installation Too Fast To Live Too Young To Die, which portrays the restlessness of an era that changed the language of speed forever.
