The exhibition Giorgio Casali photographer. Public and private landscapes offers a broad and in-depth portrait of Giorgio Casali (1913-1995)one of the most important photographers of the 20th century and a reference figure for Italian architects and designers. The exhibition, organised by the Municipality of Varese under the scientific coordination of Professors Rosa Chiesa, Giovanni Marras, Angelo Maggi and theIuav University of Venice Project Archivepresents a significant selection from the vast collection of over 150,000 negatives, plates and prints stored in Venice.
The exhibition route is divided into five thematic sectionsenriched by an introductory video and valuable archive material, including photographs published on Domusthe historic magazine edited by Gio Pontiwhich consecrated Casali at international level. In the section Design. Domestic Landscapes shots that helped define the imagery of the Made in Italyand grasping the evolution of everyday objects and lifestyles. With Portraits. Human landscapesalso realised together with their son Orestesthe photographer documents prominent personalities such as Salvador Dalí, Marinella Pirelli e Max Huberrevealing a rare interpretative sensitivity.
Two sections are dedicated to theArchitecture and the Reconstructionwith images ranging from the works of Carlo Scarpa, Aldo Rossi and Bruno Morassutti to the scars of war and the rebirth of Milan, symbolised by the Velasca Tower and from the Pirelli skyscraper. Finally, in the Productive landscapesCasali recounts with extraordinary intensity the vitality of the factories in Lombardy and the transformations of industrial society.
This exhibition not only restores the visual and documentary power of Casali's photographs, but also invites us to reflect on the intertwining of art, architecture, design and societyoffering an itinerary that is both historical memory and aesthetic suggestion.
