Gillo Pontecorvo. One battle after another

Twenty years after the death of the famous director and sixty years after the prestigious Golden Lion assigned to The Battle of Algiers the National Cinema Museum by Turin presents an extraordinary exhibition set against the evocative backdrop of the Mole Antonelliana. Edited by Mauro Genovese with Caterina Massignani , the exhibition offers a unique insight into the’Gillo Pontecorvo Archive , a valuable collection of documents donated by the family to the museum.

The exhibition offers a deep insight into the director’s creative, intellectual and civic world. Through a rich heritage of original documents, screenplays, working notes, photographs e unreleased footage digitised for the occasion , visitors will be able to explore his tireless work, starting with the years of the Resistance and thejournalistic commitment. The exhibition centres on the major “battles” that have shaped his life : the partisan struggle, the memory of the The Holocaust , overcoming the colonialism and the claim to the’the empowerment of women and young people.

Great importance is attached to his historic collaborations, starting with his artistic partnership with Ennio Morricone for composing memorable soundtracks , right through to his intellectual and political ties with the screenwriter Franco Solinas. The event also celebrates relationships with leading international figures such as Marlon Brando , Giuliano Montaldo, Pablo Neruda e Yacef Saadi. Among the most exceptional items on display, the following stands out – on public view for the first time – the Original Golden Lion 1966. The cultural programme is enhanced by a dedicated festival at the Maximum Cinema and through special activities and film screenings designed for schools.
