Japan by the Lake

The year’s most important event takes visitors on a fascinating journey through the collections of Villa Monastero, deeply influenced by the phenomenon of Japanism. The exhibition is viewed in the light of the recent and prestigious attribution of the Shibayama mobile preserved in the picturesque Oriental-style sitting area of the museum.

The beating heart of the exhibition consists of Twenty-four kimonos at the end Nineteenth century e Twentieth century, gems from the extraordinary The Nancy Martin Stetson Collection. The collection belonged to the American collector of the same name, who had made the culture and aesthetics of the Japan a way of life in its own right, and is now owned by the Mantero Group, marking the renewal of a successful partnership that began last year during the festival dedicated to Ken Scott.

To further enrich this dialogue between the shores of Lake Como and the East, the exhibition also features a number of precious works of art from the Como Silk Museum and from refined private collectors. The visitor experience is not confined to the exhibition galleries, but is enhanced by a rich programme of related cultural activities, which includes musical events dedicated, workshops educational and guided tours themed events, designed to explore the historical, textile and artistic links underlying this extraordinary cultural encounter.
