From The Ground

The centrepiece of the exhibition is the’clay, an ancient resource that serves as a vital research tool for re-examining our relationship with the planet. Part of the fourth edition of the project Earthrise – Design for a Living Planet, the exhibition brings the focus back to the material culture to reconnect with a physicality that is rough, raw and steeped in memories. In the context of the the current ecological crisis and theAnthropocenethe design is presented once again as a strongly regenerative and relational.

The exhibition comprises eight Italian projects, three international projects and one artist-in-residence programme, developed in collaboration with the Belgian centre Designregio Kortrijk. The objects on display go beyond mere functionality to raise profound questions relating to the’extraction of the material, to the the memory of places, at human and non-human communities, at digital technologies and the biomaterials.

Among the projects on display, the following stand out Conversing with Matter by Benedetta Pompili, the use of the 3D printing for clay by Uģis Albiņš and the sound sculptures by Domenico Mangano and Marieke van Rooy. This is also linked to research carried out in the Piedmont region, such as the mapping of the Bisalta by Nina Salsotto Cassina and the porcelain confetti by Alice Reina / biancodichina, right up to the hybridisation between clay and mycelium in the bio-welds of Lorenzo Silvestri and in the urban solutions developed by the’ISIA Faenza. The exhibition is rounded off by the project Dead Land by the resident designer Esmée Willemsen. The event is part of the programme for Tangible Transitions for Turin Design City in the town of Turin.
