Temporary exhibition
Felice Carena
Galleries of Italy – Milan - Milan (MI)
From Friday 17.05.2024 to Sunday 29.09.2024
The exhibition dedicated to Felice Carena (Turin, 1879 - Venice, 1966) is a tribute to the great painter from Turin, adopted by Florence and Venice, to 145 years since his birth and fifteen years after his last comprehensive anthology. Curated by Luca Massimo Barbero, Virginia Baradel, Luigi Cavallo and Elena Pontiggiathe exhibition traces the painter's expressive development, exploring the early period influenced by the Nordic luminism, come on Pre-Raphaelites and from the Symbolism of Eugène Carrière. It continues with the works of full plasticity of the 1910s, until analysing the classical season, the expressionist turn of the 1930s and the long Venetian period, which reaffirmed Carena's strong identity with Italian history and civilisation.
On show over one hundred worksincluding some of the artist's masterpieces, currently held in public and private collections, as well as important and surprising new works. A significant nucleus of drawings highlighting his formal choices completes the exhibition. The exhibition aims to illustrate the expressive richness of a painter who always reflected on the potential and quality of the figurative image. Starting from symbolism, Carena has avoided the decompositions of futurism, dialogued with expressionism, which karstically runs through his work, and woven deep references to the classical and Renaissance tradition.
