Divisionism 1900–1930. The Mark of the Avant-Garde in Italy
Gromo Losa Palace - Biella (BI)
From Saturday 28 November 2026 to Sunday 4 April 2027
An extraordinary exhibition reinterprets and highlights the evolution of the Divisionism throughout the 20th century, highlighting its role as a fundamental and radical language for the 20th century avant-gardes at Italy. The story begins in 1899, a pivotal year marked by the death of the maestro Giovanni Segantini, to follow the thread of a visual exploration that transcends its origins amongst Lombardy e Piedmont and takes on a fully national dimension.
Through a rich collection of over 150 works, the exhibition explores how new generations of artists have taken on board the lessons of the founding fathers to take the decomposition of colour to its ultimate limits. The exploration of light, the vibrant rhythm of the brushstrokes, and the saturation and intensity of the colour become expressive tools capable of transcending the mere reproduction of reality, evoking pure visual sensations and conveying the complex tensions of modernity.
The exhibition brings together masterpieces by such undisputed masters as Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo, Gaetano Previati, Victor Grubicy de Dragon, Emilio Longoni e Plinio Nomellini, alongside the experiments carried out by the leading figures of subsequent seasons, such as Giacomo Balla, Umberto Boccioni, Carlo Carrà, Anselmo Bucci, Leonardo Dudreville, Luigi Russolo e Guido Marussig. The “divided sign” thus reveals its dynamic and open nature, capable of extending its influence right into the 1920s whilst engaging in an intense dialogue with culture Deco and in line with the requirements of the A return to normality. The event will take place at the prestigious venues of Biella it bears witness to the value and vitality of a movement that has succeeded in redefining the boundaries of painting.
