Knights of the Snow. Donato Savin

The summer programme of the Tazzetti Museum covers the territory of the Viù Valley reaching the picturesque town of Lemie. Here, within the evocative historic setting of the Confraternity of the Most Holy…. In the Name of Jesus, the third summer exhibition section, curated by Aldo Audisio and entirely devoted to the sculptor’s artistic output Donato Savin. The exhibition features a selected series of nine sculptures that evoke the folklore and fairy-tale imagery of the Alpine world, carefully arranged within the building as if to simulate a solemn, ceremonial descent from the highest peaks towards the lowlands.

The works of art depict proud horses and mysterious horsemen armed with lances, skilfully carved from blocks of rock of varying geological composition, type and colour tone. This particular sculptural approach creates an unexpected and fascinating visual contrast in texture. These iconic characters are fantastical figures who, in the imagination, traverse the winter snows and perennial glaciers, giving tangible form to the ancestral beliefs, myths, fears and legendary tales handed down from generation to generation amongst the communities of the Alpine valleys. Before arriving in Piedmont, the sculptural groups were officially unveiled to the public for the first time in Aosta Valley to the historic Sant’Orso Fair in 2024, where they proved a great success, and were subsequently exhibited in Lombardy in the foyer of the Social Theatre by Sondrio and in the Masegra Castle, home to the prestigious CAST – Castle of Mountain Stories.
