Carlo Maria Mariani. The Eternity of Painting
GRANDE BRERA - PINACOTECA DI BRERA and PALAZZO CITTERIO - Milan (MI)
From Friday 9 October 2026 to Sunday 10.01.2027
The anthological exhibition dedicated to Carlo Maria Mariani It offers a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the conceptual and aesthetic world of one of the most original masters of Italian figurative painting from the second half of the 20th century. Through a carefully curated selection of masterpieces, the exhibition on display at Palazzo Citterio traces the key stages in the artistic career of the artist, renowned for having theorised and practised the reappropriation of the canons of Neoclassicism in a distinctly contemporary vein. Among the leading figures of the movement that came to be known as Colte Paints and Anachronism, the Roman painter succeeded in blending formal harmony and classical idealisation with the complexity of the conceptual thought of the 20th century.
On display in the historic rooms of Milan, visitors can admire complex allegories, idealised portraits and compositions that challenge our perception of time in art. The artist’s work does not merely allude to the past, but reactivates its evocative power to question modernity, demonstrating how the great pictorial tradition retains its value of absolute and eternal beauty. The exhibition highlights the exceptional technical skill, the refined mastery of the colour palette and the intellectual depth with which the artist has succeeded in creating a profound dialogue between the timeless forms of antiquity and contemporary artistic sensibility.
