The exhibition Brassaï. The Eye of Parishosted at the Saint-Bénin Centre in Aostarepresents an extraordinary retrospective dedicated to Brassaïpseudonym of the Hungarian photographer Gyula Halászone of the greatest protagonists of the 20th century photography. Edited by Philippe Ribeyrollesscholar and grandson of the artist, the exhibition offers more than 150 original period printsflanked by sculptures, personal objects and documentsoffering an in-depth and unprecedented view of his work.
The exhibition explores the deep connection between Brassaï and Pariscity that has been able to immortalise in its many faces: from the working-class neighbourhoods at great monuments, from nightlife at portraits of artist friends such as Picasso, Dalí and Matisseup to the famous graffiti urban. His 1933 volume Paris de Nuit is considered a milestone in the history of French photography.
The exhibition allows you to immerse yourself in the lively cultural atmosphere of interwar Paris, frequented by international artists and intellectuals. His gaze, at once artistic and documentary, reflects a unique sensitivity, capable of giving voice to the marginalised, to the anonymous and the urban fringeselements that bring it closer to the aesthetics of theart brut by Jean Dubuffet. An important chapter is also the relationship with theAmericain particular with the magazine Harper's Bazaarwhere he worked regularly at the invitation of the famous artistic director Aleksej Brodovič.
The exhibition is accompanied by a bilingual (Italian-French) catalogue published by Silvana Publishingwith critical contributions from international scholars.
