Across Italy. Photographs by Pepi Merisio
CONVENT OF SAINT FRANCIS - Bergamo (BG)

From Friday 6.06.2025 to Wednesday 31.12.2025
An image journey through Italy from the economic boom to the 1980s: this is the heart of the exhibition Across Italy. Photographs by Pepi Merisioset up at the Sestini Museum of Photographyin the evocative spaces of the Convent of San Francesco in Bergamo.
The event, supported by SIAD Sestini Foundation, custodian since 2018 of Pepi Merisio's precious photographic archive, is a project by Municipality of Bergamo and Bergamo History Museumin collaboration with the Italian Touring Club.
With about 140 black-and-white and colour photographsThe exhibition aims to tell the general public about Merisio's commitment to the editorial documentation of Italian regions, recalling among other things his long collaboration with the Italian Touring Club in the famous series 'Attraverso l'Italia' (Through Italy), published between 1956 and 1972.
An opportunity to reflect on the transformations of the Italian landscape, in its natural, man-made and human declinations, during and after the years of the economic miracle. From life in the Alps to the Florio tuna fishery in Favignana, from the Sacred Mountains of Piedmont to the Procida's Turchini procession, each photograph is a testimony of a changing Italy, told with delicate intensity.
Accompanying the exhibition is a catalogue, published by Lyasis Editionswhich contains all the images on display, enriched by an introductory critical essay by Denis Curti and an in-depth study dedicated to the Pepi Merisio fund, which became part of the Sestini Photographic Archive (archivio.museodellestorie.bergamo.it) in 2018. The catalogue is on sale at the bookshop of the Convent of San Francesco.
