Temporary exhibition
Artemisia Gentileschi. The Annunciation
Diocesan Museum Carlo Maria Martini - Milan (MI)
From Tuesday 27 October 2026 to Sunday 31 January 2027
I The Cloisters of Sant’Eustorgio are hosting the prestigious event with A Masterpiece for Milan 2026, starring the famous Annunciation by Artemisia Gentileschi, a masterpiece on loan from the Capodimonte Museum and Royal Park by Naples. Edited by M. Epifani e N. Righi, the exhibition offers a unique opportunity to admire at close quarters one of the most significant and fascinating examples of the Roman painter’s full artistic maturity. Painted in oil on canvas and dated 1630 in the cartouche in the bottom right-hand corner, the work is the first known example created by Artemisia in the capital of Campania, the city he reached following his fruitful stay in Venice. Among the most extraordinary and charismatic figures in the world of painting of the Six hundred, the painter managed to make a name for herself with great boldness, earning immense prestige and critical acclaim in an artistic world dominated almost exclusively by men. In the’Annunciation, his stylistic signature skilfully blends the influences he has absorbed from Rome, Florence and the Veneto region.
The canvas, which, given its composition and structural dimensions, may have been conceived as altarpiece or for decorating a private chapel, stands out for its dramatic and effective use of lighting: against a dark backdrop with a distinct Caravaggesque The two monumental figures emerge with sculptural power, bathed in the supernatural light that bursts forth around the dove of the Holy Spirit. The subjects’ striking gestures, combined with the exploration of colour and the interplay of light and shadow, lend the scene a sublime emotional and spiritual intensity.
