Souvenir is the most significant and comprehensive exhibition dedicated to the multifaceted figure of Alberto Savinio (pen name of Andrea de Chirico), an eclectic intellectual and one of the leading figures of 20th-century European culture. Produced in close collaboration with the’Alberto Savinio Archive With the support of an international scientific committee, the exhibition brings together some seventy-five works, including paintings and drawings, created between the 1920s and the early 1950s.
An extraordinarily versatile figure, able to move with ease between literature, theatre, music and the visual arts, Alberto Savinio has succeeded in developing a wholly personal aesthetic language in which classical myth, memory, irony and exceptional formal invention coexist harmoniously. The journey of the Agnelli Art Gallery by Turin traces the key stages of his artistic development, from his first steps taken in Paris within the scope of the Metaphysical Painting and the Parisian avant-garde, right up to his later years, which he spent in Milan e Rome. The selection of works highlights the most celebrated themes in his oeuvre: the intense family portraits, the evocative figures of anthropomorphic hybrids, the visionaries monumental toys, the metamorphic landscapes and the nostalgic references to the Greece childhood, accompanied by a comprehensive graphic section. The exhibition highlights the contemporary relevance of his thinking, exploring conceptual issues such as the’identity, the representationthe intercultural dialogue and theimagination understood as the primary means of visual understanding.
