Living in the space

A key figure in post-war Italian art and a leading exponent of the’Arte Povera, Luciano Fabro He developed a personal body of work centred on the concept of inhabiting space as a dynamic field of action. The first museum retrospective dedicated to the artist in Italy since his death in 2007 features around fifty sculptures and installations in the iconic industrial setting of the Naves by Pirelli HangarBicocca a Milan.

The exhibition explores the perceptual and spatial evolution that began in the 1960s, ranging from his earliest experiments with reflective surfaces to the complex paper-based environments and structures created by the artist habitat. These spaces, which are meant to be traversed and experienced, transcend the neutrality of the white cube to evoke the cosy atmosphere of the squares in the Baroque and the insights of the’radical urban planning.

By combining sculpture, painting e architecture, the work of Luciano Fabro brings theoretical research into dialogue with the use of different materials, ranging from the most traditional, such as marble, glass e bronzeup to silk e lead. The artist’s reflection follows in the footsteps of the Spatial Environments by Lucio Fontana and the conceptual insights of Piero Manzoni, celebrating the deep bond with the city of Milan, where the artist founded the House of Artists and taught for almost twenty years at the’Brera Academy of Fine Arts.
