Six events combining film screenings and discussions, held every other Thursday from 8 October to 17 December: four films and two discussions offering a different perspective on the present.
Controcampo returns with its autumn programme. From 8 October to 17 December, at the Polo del ’900, the Museo Diffuso della Resistenza is presenting four screenings, each followed by a discussion with the audience, and two talks with guest speakers.
Every evening is an opportunity to come together, exchange views and develop a critical perspective on current issues, bringing memory into dialogue with the questions of the present: the migration flows that have transformed Turin and Italy, racism, alliances between different communities, the impact of conflicts on the civilian population, the defence of democratic ideals and new forms of political participation. In an age marked by fragmentation and digital isolation, Controcampo is a place to be experienced in person, built on relationships as well as content.
The programme
- Thursday 8 October · Mimì the steelworker, whose honour has been wounded
- The series opens with Lina Wertmüller’s 1972 film, starring Giancarlo Giannini and Mariangela Melato: the story of a Sicilian factory worker who leaves his homeland to work in a large factory in the North. With bitter irony, the film recounts one of the great internal migrations in 20th-century Italy – the one that changed the face of Turin forever.
- 5.30 pm, film screening and discussion with the audience · Spazio Incontri, Palazzo San Daniele
- Thursday 22 October · BlacKkKlansman
- Spike Lee’s film (2018), starring John David Washington and Adam Driver, won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival and the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. Based on the autobiographical book by Ron Stallworth, the first African-American detective in the Colorado Springs Police Department, it tells the story of how, in the 1970s, Stallworth managed to infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan.
- 5.30 pm, film screening and discussion with the audience · Conference Hall, Palazzo San Celso
- Thursday 5 November · Pride
- Matthew Warchus’s film (2014), starring Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, Dominic West and Paddy Considine, which won the Queer Palm at the Cannes Film Festival, tells the story of the group ‘Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners’, which, during the 1984 British miners’ strike, raised funds to support the families in a mining village in Wales.
- 5.30 pm, film screening and discussion with the audience · Conference Hall, Palazzo San Celso
- Thursday 19 November · The civilian front. How war affects communities, past and present
- A meeting with Marco Gioannini: a discussion on civilian casualties and how changes in the nature of conflict affect local populations and alter the lives of communities.
- 6.00 pm · Spazio Incontri, Palazzo San Daniele
- Thursday 3 December · Land and Freedom
- The final screening in the series is Ken Loach’s 1995 film, starring Ian Hart and Rosana Pastor, which won the FIPRESCI Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. During the Spanish Civil War, David Carr, a young unemployed man from Liverpool and a communist activist, volunteers to go to Spain and joins a Republican militia on the Aragon front.
- 5.30 pm, film screening and discussion with the audience · Spazio Incontri, Palazzo San Daniele
- Thursday 17 December · Beyond the vote. New avenues for political participation
- The series concludes with a talk by Lorenzo Pregliasco, a journalist and political analyst, director of Youtrend and lecturer at the University of Bologna.
- 6.00 pm · Spazio Incontri, Palazzo San Daniele
The screenings are organised in collaboration with Aiace Torino.
