Harmonies and Fragments
From Giorgio Griffa to John Cage
San Secondo di Pinerolo (TO)

Live sound installation among the works of Giorgio Griffa
The composition of John Cage 44 Harmonies from Apartment House 1976 is characterised by what he called a 'multiplicity of centres structure'. The work, in its original version, required four soloists, each singing their own song independently, each representing a different religious tradition in the United States in 1776: Protestant, Sephardic, Native American and African American.
The work is featured in the rooms of the exhibition dedicated to Giorgio Griffa in the version for string quartet by the famous Arditti Quartet. Between interrupted melodic lines and suspended silences, it creates an ideal counter-song to Griffa's signs that we find on the small canvases of the 20 fragments, through a writing that looks to Bachian forms and to an ancient and immemorial past.
We will listen live to some of these "harmonies" in an unprecedented version for "battenti" (i.e. opposing) string quartets in the Castle's neo-Gothic Greenhouse, directly among Griffa's works. We will also delve into the figure of Cage thanks to the projection of the rare 1984 documentary H.C.E. John Cage in Turin by Marco di Castri, musician and filmmaker who, together with Gianfranco Barberi, has documented the work of great 20th-century artists and musicians, in collaboration with important European cultural institutions.
