Aosta Valley: Castel Savoia and Issogne Castle
Gressoney-Saint-Jean (AO)
Sunday 15 November 2026 at 08:00-18:00
Just like in fairy tales, its sharp white turrets suddenly emerge from the thick of the woods. The magic continues inside too, in a whimsical yet elegant interplay between Art Nouveau e Neo-Gothic, where daisies reign supreme: a constant tribute to the Queen Margherita of Savoy, for which the castle was built.
The laying of the foundation stone for Savoy Castle — a much-loved summer residence where the sovereign spent her holidays for over a quarter of a century — was built in 1899. Completed in just five years, the building boasts an eclectic style that blends neo-medieval and neo-Renaissance influences with the sinuous lines of Art Nouveau. The interiors still retain the original furnishings: murals, exquisite stained-glass windows, wood carvings and furnishings crafted with meticulous attention to detail. Completing the ensemble is a striking rock garden abundant in alpine species.
After the free lunch break at Gressoney, in the afternoon we’ll travel by bus to the Issogne Castle. With its extraordinary frescoes and sumptuous furnishings, the residence embodies the dream of a world suspended between the final splendours of the Middle Ages and the refinements of the Renaissance. Rebuilt by Ibleto di Challant at the end of the 14th century and transformed a century later by Prior Giorgio di Challant into a luxurious residence, the castle has survived to the present day thanks to the meticulous 19th-century restoration carried out by the Turin-based painter Vittorio Avondo.
