AM Club | A Masterpiece for Milan

On the occasion of Christmas, the Museo Diocesano Carlo Maria Martini is once again proposing the initiative A Masterpiece for Milanwith the exposition of theAdoration of the Magi by Sandro Botticelli (Florence, 1445 - 1510), one of the greatest exponents of the Italian Renaissance, a work preserved in the Uffizi Galleries in Florence.

To coincide with this exhibition, the Museum is offering subscribers a special appointment with Botticelli's masterpiece by organising an exclusive guided tour.

The panel, made around 1475, was created for the Chapel of the Magi in the Florentine church of Santa Maria Novella, commissioned in 1469 by the wealthy businessman Gasparre del Lama. The theme of the Adoration of the Magi, chosen both to honour the name of the patron, Gasparre (as the youngest of kings), and to pay homage to the Medici, fervent supporters of the Compagnia dei Magi, is treated by the artist with extraordinary inventiveness. Botticelli creates a balanced composition, with the hut placed in the centre and a wide variety of figures arranged deep in space, each characterised by different poses and attitudes.
