Not just physical activity, but also mental stimulation, an educational experience and a collective ritual: all this was what “sport” meant to the Greeks and Romans, the inventors, respectively, of the Olympic Games and of “sport” as a spectacle, for which they built extraordinary structures such as circuses and amphitheatres. The themed tour takes place amongst the Greek and Roman sections of the Museum and the remains of the Circus, well represented by the Carceres Tower in the courtyard. Participants discover how competition was based on rules and a sense of community, reflecting on the value of sport as a means of personal growth and active citizenship, whilst exploring the similarities and differences with the world of today.
