One of the most evocative works by Lorenzo Lotto (Venice ca. 1480 - Loreto ca. 1556), an artist defined as the “restless genius” of the Renaissance for his extraordinary originality, the Nativity in the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Siena, dated 1525, deals with the theme of the birth of Jesus according to an unusual iconography: in addition to the Holy Family, the figure of an elderly midwife appears. The tone is intimate and colloquial, with affectionate and spontaneous gestures that create an atmosphere of intense spirituality, also thanks to the play of glances between the characters.
