Sirmione (BS)

AM Club

Sunday 21.06.2026 at 10:30-16:45

Our journey will begin with a visit to one of the most beautiful, spectacular and best-preserved lake fortifications on Lake Garda, the Scaliger Castle. Built in the 14th century by the Della Scala family of Verona, it is the only castle of its kind that still has its dockyard. The journey will continue to the discovery of what was considered the Roman Villa of Sirmione until the 16th century and was called Grotte di Catullo (Catullus' Caves) because it was believed to belong to the Latin poet. An example of Roman civil architecture that allows us to understand the grandeur of the Roman Empire even in northern Italy. Finally, the trip will end with a visit to the archaeological area of the Roman Villa of Desenzano, a symbolic building of the late antique economy of northern Italy, characterised by the presence of large estates. The villa consists of a pars dominica with frescoes, rich mosaics and a viridarium and a pars rustica dedicated to the production of oil and grapes.
