At the stonemason’s workshop
Milan (MI)
Saturday 14 November 2026 at 14:00-15:30
Join a workshop to help the little ones discover the secrets of medieval sculpture in the quadriportico of the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio in Milan. Amidst ancient columns and stones worn by time, surprising details lie hidden: fish tails, deer antlers, lion’s paws, eagle heads and dragon’s jaws emerge from the capitals like fragments of a symbolic world now long gone. During the guided tour, we’ll learn to recognise these animals and interpret their meaning, exploring the rich symbolism that shaped the medieval imagination, with a special focus on the stonemason’s craft. The tour then continues in the workshop area: by combining real and fantastical elements, participants bring their own personal bestiary to life, experiencing first-hand the process of designing forms and reflecting on the symbolic value of these invented creatures and the meanings they may still hold in our contemporary imagination.
