Rock Art in the Camonica Valley was the first Italian site to obtain UNESCO recognition as a 'World Heritage' property. It was 40 years ago, in 1979. The rock engravings of the Valle dei Segni represent an immense deposit of prehistoric art and culture that boasts an extraordinary plurality of testimonies to be preserved, studied and valorised. Among these is the 'Rosa Camuna', the symbol of the Lombardy Region, found in numerous specimens. Regione Lombardia celebrates the anniversary of the UNESCO recognition on 6 November 2019.
The Valley of Signs is a place of unique charm and fascination, where man and the environment have interacted since prehistoric times.
There are eight parks in which rock engravings can be admired, distributed throughout the entire valley, with very different natural and landscape characteristics and documenting more than 12,000 years of history.
The extraordinary variety of subjects depicted ranges from scenes of everyday life to those of cultic value in a continuous and vital overlap of depictions that fascinates scholars and visitors from all over the world. The symbol of the Lombardy region is still the Camuna rose, a graphic reworking of an ancient engraving found on the site.
