World Heritage is perhaps the best known activity of Unesco, the United Nations agency in charge of Education, Science and Culture. With the term World Heritage Unesco recognises that some sites in the world have a particularly significant cultural, natural and historical value, a precious and unrepeatable legacy of humanity's past that must be preserved.
Today in Italy there are 59 Unesco Heritage Sitesof which 10 are located in Lombardy. To these are added three intangible assets.
In Italy, the first site to receive such recognition in 1979 was the Valle Camonica rock artmore than 140,000 symbols and signs (pitoti) engraved in the rocks that tell of thousands of years of the life of prehistoric man. One of the best known signs is the Rosa Camuna, whose graphic reworking is now the symbol of the Lombardy Region, engraved a hundred times in the rocks of the valley.
