AMclub | MASACCIO. The Crucifixion

The Museo Diocesano Carlo Maria Martini in Milan is hosting until 7 May 2023 one of the most important masterpieces by Masaccio (San Giovanni Valdarno 1401 - Rome 1428), the artist who revolutionised the history of 15th-century Italian painting. It is the Crucifixionnow housed in the Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte in Naples, a panel that was once the pinnacle of the polyptych commissioned in 1426 by the notary ser Giuliano di Colino degli Scarsi da San Giusto for his chapel in the church of Santa Maria del Carmine in Pisa, which was dismantled at the end of the 16th century. The exhibition, curated by Nadia Righi and Alessandra Rullo, is dedicated to Alberto Crespi (1923-2022), the recently deceased Milanese jurist and refined collector who donated his extraordinary collection of forty-one works on a gold background, dating between the 14th and 15th centuries, by artists such as Agnolo Gaddi, Bernardo Daddi and Gherardo Stranina, to name but a few, to the Diocesan Museum in 1999. For the occasion, in the Gold Backgrounds section of the Crespi Collection of the Museum, historical-artistic apparatuses will delve into the history of the collection and the technique of the gold background.
