Temporary exhibition
Aziza Kadyri. Choreography of the Latent
Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation - Turin (TO)
From Thursday 29.10.2026 to Sunday 28 March 2027
The Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation presents the first solo exhibition at an Italian institution by Aziza Kadyri, an Uzbek artist based in London. Her practice creates a dialogue between history and fiction, tradition and innovation, combining traditional craft skills — such as weaving and embroidery — with cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence and the machine learning. At the heart of his research are the themes of migration, uprooting and identity, with a specific focus on the experiences of women from Central Asia and the diaspora.
Choreography of the Latent presents a new series of works linked to the project Her Stage (2024–present), inspired by the artist’s grandmother and her childhood dream of becoming a traditional Uzbek dancer — a desire suppressed by the patriarchal and socialist structures of the 1950s, which confined women to the domestic sphere and the textile industry.
Through tools such as machine learning, artificial intelligence and motion tracking, Kadyri summarises a imaginary choreography which blends the grandmother’s intimate gestures with the movements of traditional dance. The installation comprises textile sculptures inspired by traditional dress, domestic thresholds embroidered, a two-channel video and a wide mirrored wall which transports the work into a virtual and immersive dimension.
