New works at the GAMeC
Seven drawings and a cartoon by Mario Sironi in the GAMeC Collections
La Bergamo Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art is expanding its art collection thanks to an extraordinary donation made by the art historian Andrea Sironi-Straußwald, the grandson of the famous Italian 20th-century maestro, under the terms of an agreement signed with the Municipality of Bergamo.
The acquisition comprises seven drawings and an impressive preparatory cartoon. Among the most notable pieces, the composition for Italy: Between the Arts and the Sciences, the famous mural painted in 1935 for the Aula Magna at Sapienza University in Rome. This work reveals a key detail regarding the museum’s collections: by linking up with the Figure (Large Nude), which is already in the GAMeC’s collection, shows that the two fragments were originally part of a single compositional design.
The donation is rounded off by a sketch designed for the canvases of the Bergamo Post Office Building e six studies focused on the design of the the grave of his daughter Rossana. A body of work that highlights the profound emotional and historical bond between Mario Sironi and the Lombard city, where the artist is laid to rest in the Monumental Cemetery within family mausoleums that are protected as historical heritage.
All the works in the donation will be incorporated into the exhibition itinerary One Gallery, Many Collections, engaging with the works by Sironi already in the gallery’s collection — including the paintings Worker and home, Mountains, two Compositions and the bronze medal The potter.
The initiative also makes use of a critical analysis booklet featuring contributions by Andrea Iezzi, Mariastella Margozzi, A. Fabrizia Previtali and Andrea Sironi-Straußwald himself.
