Tommaso Trini. The Earth as seen from the Moon

In Ettore and Claudia Gian Ferrari Archives of Museum of the 20th century by Milan, the exhibition forming part of the series Voices of the Twentieth Century traces the extensive critical and editorial work of Tommaso Trini from the early days right up to the mid-1980s. Through a carefully curated selection of material from his personal archive, for the most part unpublished, the exhibition presents a multifaceted portrait of one of the most astute observers of the’contemporary art. Critic, curator e journalist, Trini played a leading role throughout the cultural seasons of the second half of the 20th century, forging close relationships, promoting new research and experimenting with innovative forms of writing and publishing.

This exhibition traces his working method, which is based on direct observation and ongoing engagement with the artists. From its long-standing collaborations with the pages of Domus, which began in 1966, right up to the pivotal experience of founding and editing the magazine DATE, designed to document the evolution of artistic languages in real time, his work embodies a concept of criticism understood as active participation. On display are annotated books, magazines, notebooks, photographs, correspondences e audio and video recordings.

The title is inspired by the image of the Earth as seen from the Moon published in Domus in 1969, a metaphor for a way of looking at art from a broad and cross-cutting perspective. From the’Arte Povera at environmental and process-related research, from video art on the dialogue between art, science and technology, Trini interpreted the avant-garde movements as part of a global transformation of culture, providing essential tools for understanding the present.
