News published on 2 September 2026
The GAM’s collections are being expanded thanks to a contribution from the Ministry of Culture: three masterpieces from the cycle of the Tampered machine.
Important news for the GAM – Turin Civic Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art: the museum was awarded the grant as part of Photography Strategy 2026, the public call for proposals launched by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture. Thanks to this project, three works by Vincenzo Agnetti (Beyond language, 1969–1970), which form part of the famous cycle of the Tampered machine.
The project and the exhibition
The acquisition marks the culmination of the project Vincenzo Agnetti. Today is a century, organised by the GAM and curated by Chiara Bertola in collaboration with Virginia Lupo to mark the centenary of the artist’s birth.
The project forms part of the exhibition currently on display at the GAM (on view until 1 November 2026), focusing on Agnetti’s photographic experiments during the 1970s and 1980s.
Between technology, art and language
The three works included in the collection form a radical and innovative core: through the modification of a calculating machine – transformed from a functional tool into a co-creator of the work – Agnetti reflects on the codes of language and automation, offering insights and raising questions about the relationship between humans and technology that are incredibly relevant today.
In the’autumn 2026, to mark the launch of the catalogue produced in collaboration with the Agnetti Archive, the three works will officially become part of the GAM’s permanent exhibition, joining other great masters of Italian photography from the second half of the 20th century already on display at the museum (such as Luigi Ghirri, Mario Giacomelli and Claudio Abate).
