Diego Marcon. Krapfen

With the opening of the exhibition Krapfen by Diego Marcon, the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation and the New Museum in New York kick off the first edition of the New Futures Production Fund, an annual programme dedicated to supporting new artistic productions of international significance. Diego Marcon, one of the most recognised artists of his generation, continues here a profound research on the structure of the cinematographic language, exploring the boundary between moving image, space e sound.

The exhibited work reworks the classic genres of cinema, from musical at slapstick comedy, until’horror and the melodrama, drawing on an imagery that combines the structural cinema to that of entertainment. The narrative features Violet Savage in the role of a young boy of ambiguous gender, flanked by four animated garments: a pair of gloves, a scarf, of the trousers and a jumper.

Inspired by the’Golden age of US animation and the italian opera house, the exhibition unfolds through a frenetic choreography to the notes of the original score by Federico Chiari. In this context, the apparent childlike innocence of a cake is transformed into a perturbing e alarmed, capable of evoking feelings of terror e annihilation. The installation reflects Marcon's mastery in constructing worlds inhabited by characters suspended between the’human and the synthetic, the real and the inanimate, confirming his ability to manipulate the emotional registers of the spectator.
