Pirelli HangarBicocca is a non-profit foundation established in Milan in 2004 by the conversion of an industrial plant into an institution dedicated to the production and promotion of contemporary art.
A dynamic place for experimentation and research, with its 15,000 square metres it is among the largest horizontally developed exhibition spaces in Europe and each year presents important solo exhibitions by Italian and international artists. Each exhibition project is conceived in close relation to the architecture of the building and is accompanied by a programme of collateral and in-depth events. Access to the space and the exhibitions is totally free of charge and the dialogue between the public and art is facilitated by the presence of cultural mediators. As of 2012, Vicente Todolí is the Artistic Director.
The building, which once housed a factory for the construction of locomotives, includes an area dedicated to public services and educational activities and three exhibition spaces characterised by the visible presence of the original architectural elements from the last century: the Shed, the Naves and the Cube. The spaces of Pirelli HangarBicocca also host the permanent installation I Sette Palazzi Celesti 2004-2015 by Anselm Kiefer, which has become a reference point for visitors from all over the world, and the sculpture La sequenza (1981) by Fausto Melotti.
