DUOMO DI MILANO | MUSEO DEL DUOMO E CHIESA DI SAN GOTTARDO IN CORTE

The Duomo Museum originates from the Cathedral, from which all the works on display come and which constantly refers to the Duomo. Housed inside the Palazzo Reale, in the course of its history it has been the protagonist of three important exhibitions. In 1953 it was inaugurated with a design by Ugo Nebbia, in 1974 it was curated by Ernesto Brivio and in 2013 it finally reopened with an installation by Guido Canali. The museum has grown and enriched its halls and collections in relation to the patient work of replacing works that have deteriorated and for conservation reasons no longer on the Cathedral. In the chronologically arranged itinerary, sculptures, stained-glass windows, wooden models, sketches, tapestries, paintings and the Treasure of the Cathedral make it possible to follow all the phases of the Cathedral's construction, from its foundation to the 20th century, and at the same time to get to know the different artistic expressions in it since the end of the 14th century. In 2015, the adjacent 14th-century Church of San Gottardo in Corte was added to the Museum itinerary. Built according to a design by Francesco Pecorari da Cremona for Azzone Visconti, the church's interior retains its 18th-century appearance, as it was realised during the renovation of Palazzo Reale. Inside is preserved the mausoleum of Azzone Visconti, sculpted by Giovanni di Balduccio (to the left of the high altar), and the large fresco with the Crucifixion (on the counter-façade), of the Giotto school, both datable to after 1340.What emerges is the choral nature of the Duomo enterprise, of a relentless work of artists, workshops and workers who cross each other speaking different languages, but who understand each other and skilfully create the sculptural and decorative apparatus of the Cathedral. This is the actuality of the Duomo Museum, which today is a living place, to be discovered, that tells the story of the Monument and the work of the Veneranda Fabbrica every day.
