The castle that dominates the town, probably built on the structures of an ancient Roman castrum to defend against barbarian invasions, was rebuilt during the municipal period and further strengthened in the 15th century. At that time, the fortified complex housed around 120 dwellings and a church dedicated to Sant'Ambrogio, making it a true fortified village.

At the end of the 19th century, the castle was transformed into military barracks, function maintained until 1943. Subsequent restoration work has returned the patrol walkway and the ascent to the donjon, which opens up one of the most impressive views of the Lake Garda. The former officers' quarters are now home to exhibition halls and conference spaces.
