The exhibition Keepers of the Ancient at Castle of Aglièorganised on the occasion of the bicentenary of the Egyptian Museum in Turinoffers an extraordinary insight into the protection of artistic heritage during the World War II. The rooms of the castle, including the famous Salon of San Massimowere used as a safe place to store valuable works of art from Turin's museums, safeguarding them from the risks of war.
Historical photographs taken from the archives of the Soprintendenza Archeologia, belle arti e paesaggio di Torino document the setting up of rooms as shelters for works of art, in a story that combines historical memory and cultural heritage. Among the exhibits are pieces on loan from the Egyptian Museumalongside works from the castle's collections that are not normally accessible to the public. A special section explores the activity of the Carabinieri Cultural Heritage Protection Commanddedicated to the protection of artistic property from crime or damage.
This exhibition, the result of collaboration with the Egyptian Museum and the Superintendency, celebrates the crucial role of culture as a witness and custodian of historical memory, in an evocative and historically rich setting.
