Place of Worship
Basilica di Superga e Tombe Reali di Casa Savoia

The Basilica of Superga was built at the behest of Duke Vittorio Amedeo II, following a vow made to the Madonna delle Grazie in 1706, during the siege of the Franco-Spanish in Piedmont.
The Basilica was built by Filippo Juvarra, an architect from Messina of the House of Savoy. From 1965 to 2021, the worship of the Basilica was managed by the Order of the Servants of Mary.
Since 2 August 2021, the management of the Basilica has been entrusted to the SERMIG Fraternity of Hope, which takes care of the celebrations and lives in the complex.
In the basement of the Basilica is the Crypt, containing the Royal Tombs of the House of Savoy, built at the behest of King Victor Amadeus III, but the desire to have a mausoleum for the dead of the Savoy family was already in the mind of his grandfather, Victor Amadeus II.
The project was entrusted to architect Francesco Martinez in 1774, a nephew of Filippo Juvarra, and was completed in 1778. The plan of the crypt is in the form of an elongated Latin cross and houses 62 tombs of the House of Savoy. The museum spaces consist of the Cloister and the Hall of the Popes, which houses the portraits of all canonically elected popes.
