Museo Forte Bramafam

Bardonecchia (TO)
AM Piedmont and Aosta Valley
Fort Bramafam, erected on the site of the pre-existing Chateau du Bramafam, was built to protect the Fréjus Tunnel from possible French attacks. Considered, at the end of the 19th century, the most important fortification in the Susa Valley, the fort boasted first-class armament: two 120-mm Gruson armoured towers, four retractable turrets with rapid-fire cannons, six 87-mm and two 149-mm pieces.

At the end of the 19th century, the Fort Bramafam in Bardonecchia was the most important fortification in the Cottian Alps. Yet, after the Second World War, looting and devastation had reduced it to a pile of ruins.

The turning point came in 1995 thanks to the’Association for the Study of Military History and Architecture (ASSAM), which gave rise to a monumental restoration project that lasted over 20 years. The heart of the project? The creation of a large museum dedicated to the history of the Royal Army.

Today, inside the barracks block, there is an exhibition of 35 halls. Thanks to a series of detailed dioramas and period reconstructions - which count 160 dummies in original uniforms, 72 artillery pieces and beyond 2,000 artefacts of everyday life - visitors can take an unprecedented journey back in time.

In the philosophy of the Bramafam Fortress Museum, the historical “asset” is always at the centre of the narrative: uniforms, documents, weapons and personal items are enhanced to preserve and pass on the memory. Walking through the rooms of the fort, the atmosphere becomes enveloping: lights, music and sounds catapult the public into the everyday life of those who, often not by choice, were protagonists of the events of the war. From the drawers and showcases, the small memories of men who are now part of history re-emerge.

To crown this path of excellence, thanks to a close and fruitful collaboration with the National Artillery Museum, Bramafam is now officially recognised as a separate section of Bramafam.
