ROCCA DI LONATO DEL GARDA E MUSEO ORNITOLOGICO “GUSTAVO ADOLFO CARLOTTO”

The Castle of Lonato, better known as the Rocca, towers scenically over a relief of the moraine amphitheatre. From this privileged position, it dominates the southern shore of the Lake Garda and the ancient village, which stretches to the edge of the Po Valley.

Among the most imposing fortifications in Lombardy, the Rocca reveals its purely defensive nature in an irregular perimeter that extends for 180 metres. The structure has two levels: the Rocchetta, located at the highest point, and the Main District below. Although it was fought over by the Visconti and Scaligeri families, its morainic cobblestone walls now display characteristic Guelph battlements, the result of meticulous historical restoration.

Access is from the southern side through an impressive drawbridge, which can be reached by walking through the green park that joins the Rocca to the Casa del Podestà. Inside the Captain's House, visitors can explore the Ornithological Museum, which houses the prestigious collection of Gustavo Adolfo Carlotto, along with a state-of-the-art immersive hall and spaces reserved for temporary exhibitions.
