The castle's history spans a thousand years. Built between the 11th and 12th centuries under the jurisdiction of the lords of Bard, it later belonged to various illustrious families until it was completely rebuilt at the beginning of the 18th century by the bold entrepreneur Jean-François Ferrod. After a long period of neglect, the mansion was purchased in 1869 by Victor Emmanuel II of Savoy, the Hunter King, who made it one of his favourite hunting residences. Umberto I promoted major decorative campaigns there: unusual 'hunting' decorations created a final effect that was certainly out of the ordinary. Finally, the last sovereigns of Italy often chose Sarre for their summer stays.
